Gerdes Foundation

Our Beliefs

For over two decades, Roger and Sarah Gerdes have dedicated their efforts to supporting women and youth who have faced severe hardship and trauma. Starting with Mama’s Hands in Seattle—a program aimed at sheltering and transforming the lives of abused women—the Gerdes have worked to foster recovery, self-sufficiency, and dignity.

Today, the Gerdes Foundation focuses on uplifting the next generation of youth, ages 12 to 18, who will shape our society’s future. We believe in providing comprehensive support to help these young individuals overcome past trauma and step into adulthood with confidence and hope.

Youth Transformation Program (YTP)

In partnership with like-minded organizations, the Gerdes Foundation established the Youth Transformation Program (YTP) to offer crucial services designed to address the mental, emotional, and physical needs of youth. Our goal is to help them leave their trauma behind and embrace a brighter future.

Day of Transformation (DOT)

Partnerships with key community organizations such as Kootenai Health and others who provide information the DOT program are vital to spreading the word of the availability. The DOT is a “service without borders,” available for any youth, regardless of location. Youth have come from as far away as Montana, Boise, Idaho, Canada and Washington.

Testimonials

What Youth Say

“This has allowed me to leave the visible evidence of my mistakes and start over, come out into the world without the shame of who I was. Now I think about what I can become. Thank you for giving me a new life.

Laney, 17 years-old

“I went into the center one person, and came out feeling like another. I felt like I left that pain on the table, and with each procedure, more of the memory left me. I’m a new person, outside, and in.

Remy, 15 years old

  • Discovering the Healing Power of Red Light Therapy for Youth with Trauma

by Dr. Jenna Silakoski, North Idaho DPC

A Path to Healing Through Light

In a world where wellness options continue to grow, red light therapy has emerged as a promising solution for those facing various health challenges, including young people who have experienced trauma. This non-invasive treatment can offer a sense of hope and healing, providing a supportive pathway toward recovery. Let’s dive into what red light therapy is, how it works, and the potential benefits it can offer.

    What is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to stimulate healing in the body. It’s gaining attention for its ability to help with a wide range of issues, including physical and emotional health.

How Does Red Light Therapy Work?

At its core, red light therapy works by harnessing light energy to promote positive changes in our cells. Here’s a simple breakdown of how it functions:

    • Boosting Cellular Energy: The mitochondria in our cells absorb red light, which helps increase the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy source that powers our cells.
    • Improving Blood Flow: This therapy can enhance circulation by releasing nitric oxide, which opens up blood vessels and improves the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues.
    • Supporting Healing: With more energy and better blood flow, cells can repair themselves more effectively, leading to improved skin health, tissue regeneration, and overall wellness.

Potential Benefits for Youth with Trauma

Red light therapy can be particularly beneficial for young people dealing with trauma. Here are some ways it can help:

    • Pain Relief: It can alleviate physical discomfort, which might be especially important for youth who experience stress-related pain or tension.
    • Emotional Support: Red light therapy has shown promise in improving mood and may help with anxiety and depression, which can be common after traumatic experiences.
    • Skin Healing: For those who might struggle with self-image or have experienced skin issues due to stress, red light therapy can improve skin tone and promote healing.
    • Enhanced Recovery: It can speed up the healing process for injuries, which can be particularly beneficial for active young individuals or those recovering from trauma-related injuries.

    Consultation is Key

Before starting red light therapy, it’s essential to talk to a healthcare provider who understands your unique situation. They can help assess your needs, suggest the right treatment plan, and monitor your progress, ensuring that you get the most out of your experience.

    In Conclusion

Red light therapy represents an exciting opportunity for healing and growth, especially for young people navigating the challenges of trauma. Its non-invasive nature and potential to stimulate healing can provide a comforting option for those seeking support. If you’re interested in exploring red light therapy as part of your wellness journey, consider reaching out to a trusted healthcare provider. Together, you can uncover the possibilities this innovative therapy may offer in your path toward a healthier and happier life.

  • Become Eligible Today!

Participants in the Day of Transformation are typically between the ages of 14-18, and a qualification session is required. Consulting physicians, including Dr. Jenna, are sensitive to the age of the skin, and location of scars. Furthermore, certain areas are more prone to change with age. While some exceptions are considered, in general, facial scar transformations on the face are limited to ages 16-18. From the neck and shoulders down however, more work can be done. It is common to have scars on the arms from self-inflicted damage, such as cutting, but also accidents, such as a grooming technician being impaled by a sheer when a dog spooked! Scars on the abdomen, upper and lower leg can often require two or more sessions.

For direct qualification, contact the North Idaho Medical Spa, identify yourself as a prospective patient (and have your parental guardian prepared to attend and sign the required forms). Typically, photos will be taken (on a phone) and sent in for review, and as required, an in-person consultation will be conducted. All at no cost to the patient.

DOTs are scheduled every other month, with openings on the following two sessions:

    November 1st, 2024

    January 3, 2025
